Release Notes

The mütesync app is regularly updated to add new features, address issues, and add support for new platforms. Unless you opt out of updates, both the mütesync application and the mütesync Chrome Extension will auto-update so no action is needed on your part. We post the changes here so you can keep up-to-date.

Ventura Support
The app now works well with Ventura, the latest Mac OS. We appreciate your patience while we added support. This change was a large one!

Microsoft Teams 1.5.00.32154 (And Newer) Support
On Mac, Teams is now working smoothly again. Some remaining Windows issues remain but we have an update that is currently in final steps prior to deploy.

October 10, 2022 (v5.4.2 Windows Only)

Multi-button Support for Windows (Mac Already Supported)
With the partial return to physical offices, we are seeing an increase in the number of customers connecting multiple mute buttons to a single computer in a conference room. This worked for Mac, but we needed to make some changes to support multi-button support for Windows.

Windows Users: On the Preferences > Devices Tab, Windows users can now enable Multi-button support by checking the box.

Checkbox to enable support for multiple physical mute buttons for Windows.

July 11, 2022 (v5.4.1)

The mütesync app now supports the following languages.

  1. English

  2. Japanese

Performance Improvements
We’re constantly working to improve the efficiency of the mütesync app so it runs reliably and with minimal CPU usage.

June 14, 2022 (v5.3.4)

Fix: Mute Button No Longer Turns Into Night Light
When your computer goes to sleep it sometimes sends a message to the mute button. Our mute button got confused by this message and one of the LEDs would randomly turn on. This turned your mute button into an unintended night light. After many attempts, we finally found and released a fix.

White Color Option
We had teal, purple, and pink but forgot the simple, white option. Now you can set your mute button to white.

Better Performance
Another month, another set of improvements to make the mütesync app run more reliably and with less CPU resource.

Opt Out of Auto-updates (Not Recommended)
We’re always improving and updating the mütesync application. However, some users had to move mountains to get IT to install the mütesync app and each update requires another round of IT approvals. Now you can opt out of the automatic updates on the Settings tab.

Removed the “Currently Monitored” Info on the Advanced Tab
This information was no longer accurate once we finished moving our meeting integrations with Zoom, Meet, and Teams over to our new, more stable, SyncEngine and removed Discord support.

May 11, 2022 (v5.2.0)

HomeAssistant Bug Fix
Our prior release broke our HomeAssistant integration. We have fixed the issue and added regular HomeAssistant users to our Beta group for better test coverage of future updates.

Retire the Old Code and “Big Red” Button Support
Now that the new SyncEngine has been stable (and awesome) for a few months we’re removing more parts of the old codebase to further improve the efficiency of the app. This includes removing support for our old V1 and V2 buttons, affectionately known as Big Red. We have contacted all users of the old buttons to ensure they have a newer version. If you didn’t hear from us for some reason, message us for a new replacement button.

April 30, 2022 (5.1.1)

Windows Certification
We finally made it through advanced Windows security certification so that Windows users won’t see the Windows Defender warning when installing the mütesync app. This should make it easier to install mütesync on your Windows computer without having to get your IT team involved. At the very least it’s one less red flag the IT team will yell at you about! If your IT team still blocks our mute button (the button itself, not the application) you may be able to have them whitelist your mute button.

Retire Discord App Support
It’s never easy to walk away feature. We sunk weeks of work trying to get the Discord app working reliably but we’re waving the white flag. As of this upcoming version we will no longer support the Discord app. We will continue to support Discord via the Chrome browser but will be removing all references to Discord on our website and app. Apologies to the handful of Discord users who stuck around as we tried to get things working smoothly. If we haven’t already connected, please message me to make things right.

Bug Fix: Only Connect With the Mute Button
Now that we removed support for our older mute buttons we have enhanced our connection logic to better connect only with our new mute buttons. This means less bugs where our mütesync app tried to connect to other third party peripherals.

February 22, 2022 (5.0.6)

Better Auto-update Logic
Some Mac users weren’t getting the correct application installed. We changed the flow a bit to prompt the M1 users to manually replace the app with our newer version.

February 16, 2022 (5.0.1)

After a lot of late nights, head scratching, and anger at why something so seemingly simple was so difficult we FINALLY got the SyncEngine for Mac live. Thank you for your patience!

Better Performance on Mac
We are now using our new SyncEngine! Now the Mac app will run with far less CPU resource, stay connected more reliably, and should rarely flicker.

Full Sync on Team on Mac
In the past we had full sync on Windows and partial sync on Mac. Thanks to our new partner integrations we are able to fully sync with Teams on Mac.

Cross Desktop Support For Teams and Zoom on Mac
Regardless of the virtual desktop you’re in, the mütesync app (and button) will continue to monitor your meeting and sync your mute status. (Discord coming soon)

Easier Button Troubleshooting
Sometimes corporate IT software blocks the mütesync mute button from connecting. We’ve added more information to the Devices tab in Preferences to help identify this issue.

Open Source
We've also open-sourced our Chrome browser extension. So if you want to add support for a web based video meeting client you can contribute here. Feel free to contact us with questions.

January 4th, 2022 (4.12.5)

Drivers Now Included: After months of helping people download the correct Windows drivers we figured out a way to handle the driver installation in the background. So now any new user will get the correct Windows driver and existing users may notice an update if their drivers weren’t up to date.

Windows 11 and Windows Home Support: We fixed many new bugs introduced by Windows 11 and extended our support for Windows Home users. Our Windows mütesync app should now be extremely stable, especially on Zoom, Teams, and Meet. We have some remaining bug fixes for Discord that are coming soon.

Microsoft Teams: Microsoft regularly updates the Teams app. Recent changes to their Microsoft Teams app caused some bugs that were quickly resolved.

December 7th, 2021 (4.12.1 - beta)

Behold, the SyncEngine! The team has been hard at work building a new software architecture to power the mütesync app. We call it, the SyncEngine. (Insert wild round of applause) 🎉 The SyncEngine improves many aspects of the application which I’ll review below. We began rolling out the SyncEngine to our beta users this week to help us find and squash bugs before rolling out the update to everyone.

The following changes apply to WINDOWS only. The MacOS update is coming soon in a month.

Cross-desktop support: Often users work with multiple “virtual desktops.” Regardless of the virtual desktop you’re in, the mütesync app (and button) will continue to monitor your meeting and sync your mute status.

Less Flicker: We’ve reduced the amount of CPU required to run the mütesync app. Computers are often at their CPU limit when in a meeting with their video on and sharing their screen. So when we also run the mütesync app we saw issues where mütesync would flicker as it struggled to get CPU resource.

Easier Setup: Zoom users on Windows no longer need to ensure “Always Show Meeting Controls” is checked. We also no longer need to bring Zoom or Teams into focus in order to mute/unmute.

October 14, 2021 (4.11.2)

setup and faq.jpg

Onboard Bug Fix - The 3rd party tool we use for onboarding made some changes that broke our onboarding guide for new users. We fixed that.

Renamed Onboarding and Added FAQ - We renamed our Onboarding option in the menu to Setup (it links to our step-by-step guide) and added FAQ (that links to the FAQ section on our website.

Removed Chrome Extension Tooltip - On the Advanced Tab we tried to be helpful and recommend downloading the Google Chrome Extension whenever our app wasn’t tracking a Google Meet meeting. But it made people who already did download the extension think they needed to go download it again. We removed the tooltip until we think of a better way to only tell users who have NOT downloaded the Chrome extension to go do it! (Need it? Go here!)

October 11, 2021 (4.11.1)

Teal Color Support: We left out this crucial color choice. Now we have Teal! 💯

HomeAssistant Workflows can “Toggle Mute” - Home Assistant is a Home Automation platform. Users do neat things when they join a meeting like switch a lamp in their hallway red, or turn up the brightness of their ring light. Now we added the ability for Home Assistant users to trigger the mütesync mute toggle using a HomeAssistant workflow. Now Home Assistant users can make any Smart device a physical mute button!

Overall App Stability: Periodically we clean up the code base to make the app easier to maintain. This version includes numerous changes that should not effect the behavior of the application, but tidy up the house.

September 27 (4.10.8)

Bug Fixes: More improvements to reduce light flickering.

2021-09-27_12-20-54.png

Devices Tab: With our backers now starting to receive our newest buttons we’re adding some features to better help troubleshoot issues. We cleaned up the columns on the Device tab to make it easier to understand. We also added visual feedback when you press the button and added a Test Button Light button.

Alpha/Beta Label: We added an Alpha/Beta label in the top right, so you can be sure you are a beta tester even if we do not currently have an active beta version deployed.

September 15 (4.10.5)

Bug Fix: No More Flicker - As we added more platforms and features the app and button could flicker. We added a number of fixes to the code base to improve stability to handle heavy usage even when your computer may be under a heavy load.

Bug Fix: System Mic - In rare cases users could get temporarily “stuck” on mute when moving from one meeting app to another. Now when ending a meeting where we rely on our system mic integration, we ensure the app is reset properly.

Bug Fix: Buttons Light Turn Off on Quit - If you quit the mütesync app during a meeting (while the light is on) the button light now turns off.

August 30 (4.8.7)

Brightness Control - For users who have our newest (V3) physical button you can now control the brightness with a slider. We also added a “Restore Defaults” option.

Virtual Button Custom Color: Now when you select a custom color for your mute and unmuted status the color is also applied to the icon in the virtual button.

Bug Fix: Could Crash if Computer Goes to Sleep - We added logic so the mütesync application goes to sleep if your computer sleeps. However, it wasn’t waking up properly. We gave it some coffee and now it should work after your computer wakes up without needing a restart.

Bug Fix: Smoother Version Updates - When releasing a new version of the mütesync app sometimes the app would hit issues and update multiple times. This was especially problematic for beta users since we release multiple beta versions each week. We fixed the bug so updates are smoother.

August 23 (4.8.4)

Advanced Tab

Advanced Tab - Added a new tab to our UI that contains information to help understand what meeting is being tracked, and if necessary, restart parts of the app. This will help technical users self-debug and provide our support team with more information when helping customers.

Onboarding Improvements and Bug Fix - The tool we use for our onboarding tour removed the embed feature we relied on. As a result our onboard tour has not been opening properly. We changed our implementation so the onboard will now open in a browser tab. We also took this time to add more information about setting up both older (v2.1) and newer (v3.0) physical mute buttons. We also added information about configuring our two newer integrations, Full Teams App and Full Discord App support.

August 16 (4.8.2)

Preference Page Improvements - Fixed bug where the Preference page on Windows failed to open properly. Improved legibility of font. Rewrote text to be less tech nerdy.

August 14 (4.8.0)

mutesync preferences page

New Preferences Page - To add support for color customization for the newest mute button we are adding more functionality to our Preferences page. In addition, our current Preferences page is pretty janky. We took some time to clean it up and use a UI kit so it’s easier to manage. Expect this to continue to change as we tweak it throughout the beta. Anything you want added? Let us know!

Launch mütesync on Login - You can now choose to have mütesync launch after you restart your computer.

August 10 (4.7.3)

Stability Improvements - Improved the application logic to better cull unused processes. This will help prevent the app from consuming too much CPU.

Aug 3 (4.7.2)

Windows Zoom Room Support - We now have support for breakout rooms in Zoom on Windows.

July 23 (4.7.1)

Beta Program - Until this release we had to send around links to download the beta version of our application each time we had an update. Now we an official Beta program. Enrolled Beta users will automatically get updated to a beta version of our app.

Interested in getting beta features? Email us to get added. (Note: Not all features listed below as Beta will be available. We’ll remedy this as we launch the current beta features like video toggle, launch on startup, etc.)

Discord Support (Beta) - Added additional Discord support and bug fixes. Released to Beta users as (v4.7.1-beta).

Bug Fixes: Bug fixes and improvements for Zoom, especially on Mac. Bug fixes and improvements for Microsoft Teams, especially on Windows

July 15nd (4.7.0)

Discord Support: We’ve added full app support for both Windows and Mac for the Discord App.

Bug Fixes: Handled some Teams related bugs. Still one or two remaining issues to address to move Teams out of beta.

July 2nd (4.6.0)

Teams App Support: On Windows, we now have full bi-directional sync support, just like we do for other video meeting tools like Zoom and Meet. On Teams for Mac we rely on using the system mic. So on Mac, the mute button will toggle mute and light up beautifully. But if you mute from the Teams application, the button will not change status/color. We’re continuing to look for ways to make the Mac version fully bi-directional as well.

June 15, 2021 (4.5.0)

Bug Fixes: Improved stability and backend changes to enable upcoming Teams App support.

May 30, 2021 (v4.4.2)

Windows Stability improvements: After our Home Assistant integration went live we had tons of new Windows users. 👍Unfortunately, many of those users reported frequent crashes and an annoying permission message. 👎 So we are happy to announce we added numerous bug fixes and enhancements to eliminate the crashes and reduce the annoying mütesync messages on Windows.

Video Toggle (Beta) - Extended support to our Chrome Extension to handle video toggling for more meeting applications. As a reminder, this feature is hidden for most users until we move out of Beta.

Launch on Startup (Beta) - When you restart you computer mütesync will automatically launch. You can toggle this feature off if you prefer to start-up. As a reminder, this feature is hidden for most users until we move out of Beta.

Alternate Mute Method (Alpha) - Today mütesync stays in sync with each individual meeting application directly. This way, even if you mute from the application or the host mutes you, we always know your mute status and can stay in sync. While we’d love to add every meeting application (BlueJeans, Webex, etc.) it takes a lot of work! So we’re testing a simplified way of muting that would allow you to use the mütesync button as a mute toggle, but it would not monitor your mute status. We’re not sure if we’ll ever release this feature fully so we’ve added it as a hidden Alpha feature.

May 5, 2021 (v4.3.0)

Bug Fix: App crash details weren’t submitting properly. Now they do.
Preferences Tab: Added a preferences tab with an authentication feature so mütesync can authenticate external apps like Home Assistant. The page is fairly janky and will get some styling updates. :)

April 28, 2021 (v4.2.0)

Integrated with Home Assistant: Many of you wanted to turn on light bulbs when in a meeting or change the color of a desk lamp when your mic was live. To enable this, we integrated with one of the largest home automation platforms, Home Assistant. Our integration launches May 5th and will be found here.

Better Error Logging: Now when a user submits a bug or the app crashes we collect more information about the app version, state of connected hardware, etc. Are you having an issue? Click on the mütesync icon in the system tray when not in a meeting and Report a Bug.

Test App for Manufacturing: As we manufacture our newest round of mute buttons we needed a way to test the circuit boards, LEDs, and other hardware components. Now our manufacturing team has a dedicated application they can use to run each button through a battery of tests. This quality control step will ensure the buttons are ready for you!

April 18, 2021 [4.1.0]

Video Toggle (Alpha): Added the ability to set the mütesync app and associated hardware to toggle video instead of audio. This feature is hidden until released from beta.

Bug Fix: App Sometimes Crashes on Quit
Improved cleanup when quitting the application to eliminate a bug that caused the app to crash when trying to quit mütesync.

System Info: Added System Info to help debug issues. The option is hidden in our debug menu and will be moved to the main menu once released from beta.

Mar 30, 2021 (v4.0.23)

Rage Enablement - When users of our physical button mash the button (press it multiple times very quickly) our app would occasionally glitch. This made the button appear out of sync and/or flicker. Tom refactored a portion of our code to use some fancy data compression techniques that I don’t understand. And now we handle rage clicking with ease!

Mar 21st (v4.0.22)

Microsoft Certification: We now have a fully certified Windows app. Now I have to stop making jokes at the expense of Windows users.

Discord Support: We added Discord support to the lineup. This means we now support the Zoom app, and then, via the Chrome Browser: Teams, Google Meet, Whereby and Discord.

Kickstarter Prep: To bring our newest custom-made mute button to life we’re running a kickstarter campaign. Learn more here!

Feb 10th (v4.0.18)

Google Chrome Extension: In order to use the mütesync virtual or physical mute button for browser-based video tools like Google Meet and Whereby you can now install our mütesync Chrome Extension.

We Made it Official: We finally got our website, app, social media account, Chrome extension, email, packaging, ads, t-shirts(?), and everything else we own branded with our name, mütesync.™️

Onboarding Tour: To help new users set up the app, installation now kicks off a step-by-step checklist. If you’d like to check it out here’s a sample.

Error Logging: As our customer base has grown, so have the questions! In order to better answer questions, diagnose issues, and get faster resolution we added error logging.

Jan 14th (v4.0.12)

Removed the Dock Icon: Reduce the clutter! The mütesync application no longer shows as an open application on the Mac Dock (the bottom of your Mac screen). Instead it only appears as an icon in the top right Mac Menu bar.

New Application Menu: When you are not in a meeting you can click on the mütesync Mac Menu icon (top right) and access the menu. During a meeting, clicking the button will mute and unmute. To access the menu during a meeting, use option+click.

Report a Bug: To help quickly diagnose any potential bugs we added a quick and easy way to report any issues. Just click on our new menu and choose “Report a Bug.” Feel free to also say hello!
